JOSHI's BALLOON:
I do not have to advise Narendra Modi, he knows much better,
as otherwise he will not be there where he is now. My humble suggestion to him
will be to be careful with these 'aastheen ke saamp', persons with their own
agenda. When you respect them for their age, they start thinking that you are
respecting them for their 'intelligence'; When you tell them that they have
done a job well as courtesy and not in its real sense, they think you mean
'nobody could have done it better'! I have come across many such people in my
life of seven and more decades. I had a way with them. I used to call them in
private, look them in their eyes and tell them with a broad smile and without
any preamble: "Look, I respect your age and I know you are good enough in
your place. But the minute I find that you are thinking that you deserve better
opportunities, I will make sure you get out of the organization and find that
opportunity for yourself. Don't expect me to find it for you. I will not repeat
this discussion nor will discuss it with anyone else. I will forget it the
minute I leave this room. OK?" Without another word I used to leave the
room after shaking hands. I never had any problem with such people later on. It
is all a question of bursting the balloon.
