Nitish and his DNA: "Chaubeyji chhabbeji banne gaye
aur dubbeyji banke aaye!"?
In the book "Straight and Crooked Thinking"
authored by R. Thouless and published in 1958, the author comprehensively
discusses how arguments are carried forward to win. One of the false tactics
mentioned by him is "Taking the opponent to the extreme of his position,
condemn it and thereby condemn the whole argument". For instance if your
opponent says "Eating banana is good for health.", counter him with
the false argument saying "Yes, yes, eat one in the morning, one more for
breakfast, another for lunch and one at tea and one more at dinner and the last
at bed time and then see how many times you keep running to the loo at
night." Your statement is not false and seems to be winning the argument,
till one applies his mind to it. Nitish is doing the same thing in this
argument. He is picking up the word DNA and takes its literal meaning, instead
of popular implied meaning. If you apply the literal meaning, of course, PM
Modi would have been wrong and Nitish will sound to quite right in his false
accusation. But any literate person will be able to see through it. He and his
campaign managers might gloat over the letter if they want to believe in their
own falsehood, but people are not taken by it. Rather they will only have a
good laugh at his foolish attempt to put one over them. Do you remember the
Hindi proverb: "Chaubeyji chhabbeji banne gaye aur dubbeyji banke
aaye!"?
