THE ONLY AND ONLY EASY WAY TO CONTROL TRAFFIC CONGESTION:

Most of the roads cannot be widened any further even if you ban pedestrian traffic and also parking! With the number of cars increasing day by day, it is only the traffic lights which can help us with some quick fix !

By now everybody should know the shortest route between two points may be a straight line in space scientifically but surely not by time! Therefore different
mobile applications should be made available indicating at any given moment the approximate time needed to move from any point to another by different routes which should also include among other things start and finish destination, time likely to take and route map. Most people will happily opt for a longer route if they can surely save time. The present congestion is not as much because the roads are not wide enough; it is more because all want to go by the shortest route, unfortunately thinking that is also the quickest route! Cost should not be appreciably more because the forced idle time in shorter routes will eat up savings in petrol consumption.

If we add to this 'intelligent traffic lights' which will direct traffic in such a way that the routes with longer waiting lines, get a little more time to clear, instead of all routes getting the same time. Very often most of the traffic is in the same direction either in the morning or evening. It can be well adjusted with intelligent traffic.

We may need electronic markers at regular distances to facilitate consumers to easily feed data for the software. If addresses incorporate the electronic markers it should not be a big problem. People will get used to it.

Land costs in shopping area and other important points in city are rocketing up every day. Smaller building in most frequented route with no underground parking are the worst bottle necks in smooth movement of traffic. Demolition of those buildings and constructing new ones in their place could be very helpful. However, getting the already established businesses will almost be next to impossible with present laws. You cannot make omelettes without breaking eggs. May be a generous compensation and/or loans for relocation and/or promise of   first right on the new building in the same floor might go a long way. Multistorey exclusive garages at intervals can also help a lot in resolving parking problems.

When we design our smart cities, we should ensure long stretches of roads with several lanes but ONLY on pillars with exits at frequent intervals. There is no other way to future explosion in the number of cars.

With the driverless cars of future a lot of these problems could be solved because there computers will be talking to each other and get you to your destination as fast as possible. But I would think at least in India we would be using present day cars for a long time to continue and spend a good measure of 24 hours in our days in commuting.
