India is not a developing country
any more. It has developed enough to send a mission to mars and send out
satellites for the world including the USA; can afford to pay in dollars for
the armaments it purchases as the second biggest buyer in the world, has the
largest workforce under 50, has enough turnover of scientists to send to every
country as it has been doing these years, has a currency which has withstood
the vagaries of oil market, has very low debt, second largest army, etc. etc.
So why should it not accept entry of Monsanto when so many world industry
leaders have their own manufacturing plants in India? It is because once
India accepts Monsanto technology which is patented, its own agricultural base,
the worlds biggest, will be totally eroded in a decade or so. It is producing
organically per acre what could be produced genetically. Its lands are still
very very fertile. Our scientists are fully capable of solving the problem with
pests. We don't need short term benefits.
Comment of Mr. Thomas Jones on the
article:
Upper middle class westerners have the money and choices to
avoid GMO foods based on beliefs bordering on superstitions. India's poor
and other third world people need protein and calories to survive and feed
their children. GMO crops can increase food yields and no provable harm
to human health has been demonstrated. Russia & China reject GMO
products from the US and other countries because of trade wars and politics,
not because GMO products are bad.
My remarks on the above comment:
THOMAS JONES If GMO foods are so good, why are we paying a
higher price for ORGANIC foods which are advertised as better food? While I
know the role marketing plays in the US consumer market, you cannot fool all
for all the time. The first thing Britishers did on conquering India was
destroy its handloom industry so that the cotton mills in Manchester could
capture the huge Indian market, which they did, for more than a century. India
may not be rich enough to compete capitalistic countries, but it has more than
enough of scientists and technologists to fully take care of itself.
Incidentally, forget bracketing India with countries where poor are dying on
the wayside. It is not giving food aid to other needy nations. It pays for
whatever it needs. No more charity. So please get down from your high horse.
