Gandhi and the Drain
Inspector
Katherine Mayo, an American author, wrote a book 'Mother India'
published in 1927 in which he rightly wrote about, but focused only on, the
shortcomings in India, such as caste, oppression of ladies, etc. and gave a
copy of it Mahatma Gandhi for his comments. As a man wedded to truth more than
his life, could not say anything wrong was written by her. But he was also
equally very very intelligent and a great communicator. He just responded to
say that it was a "report of a drain inspector sent out with the one
purpose of opening and examining the drains of the country to be reported
upon". Similarly in Mahabharat we
have an episode when Yudhishtra, the great Gyani, was asked what did he see in
the world: His reply was: "It is full of good people, doing their best for
the welfare of the nation." When the same question was put to Duryodhan,
the villain he was, replied: "It is full of rotten people, interested in
themselves and waiting to cut the throat of others.". Gujrat awaits the
arrival of Duryodhan in the form of Drain Inspector in Chief Arvind Kejriwal
who will surely find enough dirt in Gujarat and will not be able to see any
progress whatsoever.
