MODI'S CONSTITUENCY:
IF EVERYONE EQUAL BEFORE LAW, SHOULD NOT EVERY LAW BE EQUAL FOR ALL?
An element of surprise is one of the tactics in any competition.
Other parties are eagerly awaiting to know where Modi will be contesting so
that they can modify their own strategy to defeat him by hook or crook, such as
manipulation of voters lists, putting up a large number of candidates as
independents so as to split votes, even setting up the election in such a way
there could be a possibility of countermanding the election so that Modi is
made to wait before assuming office. It is not easy to change the constituency
once declared because it will create its own problems. If BJP is not in a hurry
to declare all its candidates why others should be so anxious to satisfy their
own curiosity? As far as Sushma's questions are concerned, no election has been
fought by any party so far without a few bad apples in their basket. There
should be some limit as to the age of proposed candidates. Let's not forget
that it is a five year term and losing a midterm re-election will be an
unnecessary bother. Modi will be able to win from a number of constituencies.
But it has to be evaluated which will have the maximum impact. With elections
being held over a period of several weeks, the constituency wherefrom Modi will
be contesting should be in the early stages so that he is free to campaign
during the rest of the election period. So let's not let our imagination fly
and come to wrong conclusions.

BOYCOTT OF NDTV
This is what happens when media compete with each other to
catch eye balls. This is what creates a false euphoria or false panic when
false tweets are retweeted without verification. This is what makes government
very much afraid of very serious consequences because of instant reaction of
masses. This is how reputations built over decades are lost forever because of
mischief. Even a reputation or public apology cannot help because the same
message will keep on being referred and people will start wondering how could
there be smoke without fire! It is all the more damaging when such a false
tweet is repeated by a national TV. It will also face consequences because one
story of 'bagh aaya, bagh aaya' is sufficient for it lose its long built
reputation.

LAND AT THROWAWAY PRICE IN GUJARAT : KEJRIWAL
What nonsense! Of course State governments buy land from
farmers and in turn sell them at subsidized price to industrialists. That is
how industries are developed. They provide direct and permanent employment to
thousands and many more thousands set up small scale industries, shops, etc. to
provide the industries raw material and to sell their output. Giving speeches
like this to innocent farmers is nothing less than cheating. The farmers are
also paid a good price for the land prevalent at that time. If they invest the
money they get from government in buying land elsewhere, they will be able to
have more land and also some money to buy or build a house. BJP speakers should
explain this in meetings and not be afraid of speaking about takeover of land
from farmers.
Most of the farmers will be willing to sell their land, but
only at a really good price. They are angry only because middlemen deprive them
of a good price. There are a number of ways land could be acquired at a correct
price without any coercion.
(i) Government can buy up small pieces of farm land whenever
available from farmers directly by extending loans to them and rent it back to them
at nominal interest, with the proviso that government will have the first right
to take over the land at a later date, after offering compensation at a level
that might be fixed later on or at a level so many times more than the price at
which it is being bought. This will eliminate village money-lends squeezing out
farmers forever. A project of this nature can be run through district
agricultural co-operative banks.
(ii) Buy and hold
small pieces of land and offer it in exchange to farmers who are willing to
sell their land for industrialization at a reasonable price.
(iii) Banning any re-sale of agricultural land within ten
years of purchase except to government.
(iv) Enact suitable laws to buy at an average price of nearby lands or at any
price that particular piece of land would have been sold before certain period
or at the price it was sold last to anyone after being held for over ten or
more years.
Steps such as these will dissuade middle men from cornering small pieces
of land when they get advance information about new industries being set up and
then selling the same land at a steep market up price after aggregating the
small pieces

IF EVERYONE EQUAL BEFORE LAW, SHOULD NOT EVERY LAW BE EQUAL FOR ALL?
The taste of the pudding will be in the eating. We have laws
and more laws. It is at the implementation stage that corruption raises its
head. Let us see how our judges at various levels, not known very much for
standing up for upholding law rather than political pressure, cooperate with
the SC. If they do, it will be the first step towards good governance. Will the
court also please fix similar time limits for other litigation. Fundamentally
it will be, I think, discriminatory to hold violation of some laws as requiring
expeditious disposal as compared to other laws. As everyone is equal before
law, every law should be equal for everyone.
